Orange peels contain higher levels of many minerals and vitamins such as vitamin C and dietary fiber than the fruit.
There are dozens of uses, both medicinal and practical, for orange peels that are unknown to most. Next time you think about throwing away these peels, you may want to have this information handy.
Here’s some ideas I found around the web for what you can do with orange peel instead of just throwing it in the bin:
1. Body Scrub
Wrap up the orange peels in gauze pads and rub them on your skin while you are in the shower. The scrub will brighten your skin and give it a great smell.
2. Bath Powder
Dry out the orange peels completely and grind them down to paste in the food processor. Do this until the rinds become a fine powder and then sprinkle only a bit in your bath (1).
3. Get rid of shoes’ bad smell
Put orange peel in a cloth bag, tie the bag and place it in the shoes from which bad smell spreads. The peel will completely absorb the smell.
4. For cleaning
Put orange peel in a glass jar and pour white vinegar over it, just enough to cover it. Keep the jar in the fridge for several weeks and make sure to stir it occasionally.
After that, strain the mixture and transfer it in a bottle with a sprayer. Use this mixture to clean windows and floors .
5. For cholesterol and triglyceride
Studies have shown that orange peel can dissolve cholesterol and triglyceride. That means consumption of orange peel can benefit obese persons who have high cholesterol levels (3).
6. To calm nerves
Essential oils from orange peels are sedative in nature so can be used to calm nerves and induce sleep. Use orange peels in baths or simmer in a pot for uplifting your mood and drive away insomnia.
7. For acne
Oranges contain a lot of vitamin C, that work as a light sunblock. Orange will also tighten skin and works against acne. Rub the insides of an orange peel over face and neck, rinse after 20 minutes (4).
8. Make a candle
Carefully peel off half of the orange’s peel. Put little bit of oil in it and light the little white wick-like piece (watch the video below).
9. Make Orange Peel Candy
Candied orange peels are made by boiling a dried orange peel in sugar for about an hour. You can then cover them in chocolate as mentioned above, or roll them around in sugar for an even sweeter taste.
